Question about specifics of tampering with mail?

I could be in trouble for placing some fliers in peoples mail boxes. I did not take anything out, but a mailman stopped me and said it was a federal offense to touch their mailboxes. I'd just like as much information about this as possible, and I would also like to see a source on a few answers please
